Best Of The Boards (Reds vs Pirates)

Posted: August 12th, 2008 | Filed under: Last Decade | No Comments »

The Pittsburgh Pirates are the cause of a best of the boards post. Seriously?

Hexbreaker: “Pirates huge, Reds are 1-9 and hitting .218 last 10. I don’t care who is pitching”

Who cares about pitching. Hexbreaker has 10 games worth of meaningless hitting data to back his pick up with.

BillyBuck: I thought maybe when Karstens was pitching well vs the Cubs that it was just luck, but it’s not luck when you go 6 IP at Wrigley with no ER, and then you deliver a CG shutout @ Arizona vs Randy Johnson.”

Complete games are extra meaningful when they come against Randy Johnson because you have to survive facing him and his .124 career BA at least 3 times to reach your goal. And there is absolutely NOTHING lucky about throwing 15 scoreless innings when you have been striking out 1 batter every 2.5 innings over that stretch. No luck there at all.

nmcnabb: Pirates -105 – Volquez hasn’t look so great recently, Karstens has. Not to mention the Pirates have a pretty decent home record. Losing Dunn hurts the Reds more than most will expect”

No, Karstens hasn’t looked good. His surface stats are just tricking you into thinking he has been good. Since being traded to the Pirates he was walked 5 and struck out 6 in 15 innings. That is right in line with the virtual 1K/BB ratio he has put together over 74 career big league innings. I wonder why the proprietors of the LVSC aren’t pricing him as an ace yet.

DKJNR: “Pittsburgh Pirates ML -102 1 unit I’m a Karstens believer against bad reds team”

The 2008 Cincinnati Reds: 52-67, 510RS, 610RA, -100 RD, Recently traded two slugging outfielders the 2nd of whom was dealt yesterday.

The 2008 Pittsburgh Pirates: 54-64, 566RS, 646RA, -80RD, Recently traded two slugging outfielders the 2nd of whom was dealt two weeks ago.

There are galaxies separating these two clubs at the moment.

KansasState1: “Reds no Dunn=Done”

In the time that it took me to type this out the Reds went from +115 dogs to -105 favorites.

Reds -105 (1)

Reds/Pirates Over 8.5 +114 (1)

Seattle +181 (1)

I can’t even get hard at the thought of another Garland fade because betting on Seattle has become so grotesque for me.

Royals +176 (1)

I searched and searched for a reason to pass this. Vazquez has probably out pitched his ERA, but you can say the exact same thing about Bannister. The under seemed like an ideal solution, but 9.5 is sort of high, and the consensus numbers just aren’t there. I’d rather lose doing the right thing.

Colorado -123 (1)

The Diamondbacks are super public dogs.

Oakland +130 (1)

I miss rolling with the Rays.

Atlanta +153 (1)

San Diego +109 (1)

Philly/LAD Under 7 +117 (1)

Baltimore/Cleveland Under 10.5 -107 (1)

I hate to go against Diver Ron’s MLB POY.

You’re an idiot for going against DiverRon’s pick. Didn’t you see what Ltrain14 posted? He posted a picture of a clover, followed by a picture of a baseball! You want to go up against that? Why not just light your money on fire, dummy?

Best of the boards is, by far, my favorite feature on the site.

Sorry, that was a typo. I meant to write:

    “Reds no Donne = done”

Apparently, Adam Dunn took his massive, inspirational library of British poetry with him to Arizona. Along with Dunn, Jay Bruce, Edwin Encarnacion, and, believe it or not, Dusty Baker would gather before the beginning of each game, read a favorite poem, and then loudly proclaim the virtues of his respective ethnicity’s women.

It was a kind of a bonding thing.

    JK,

Then you are going to love what I do with them this football season.

I may have to pay the guys at http://www.firejoemorgan some sort of royalty.

You’ll have to wipe that smug look off your face in a couple of months when Mr. Karstens is handed the Cy Young award. For Christ’s sake, man, the dude got slugger Randy Johnson to ground out to third! Twice!

Any Olympic womens bball plays? Check out this beauty:

    Ov 164 -110

    10:15 am 3256. WMali

I starkly refuse to look at any non men’s basketball Olympic lines. If I do I will end up fading Michael Phelps and Misty May, and it won’t end well for me.

If it were anyone but the U.S. I would lean towards laying the points there.

Despite SF being a poor team, How is Lincecum not getting pounded by now? …Especially against the very average Astros. The line has SF as a slight dog and I figured the public would be all over it but Wagerline has 60%+ on Houston. If he still isnt getting the public’s attention, why no play here?

  9. 9: moneyline said at 3:02 PM on August 12th, 2008:

The Giants are getting plenty of action. Again, a 60/40 split for a home favorite on Wagerline is not over whelming by any stretch of the imagination.

At this point in my career I do my best to avoid any play that can be construed by normal people as attractive.

There lies my primary hangup. The looks of disgust when talking about my daily baseball card at work finally gets to me and I start trying to force a contrarian play in a square hole

  11. 11: Spoelstra said at 3:50 PM on August 12th, 2008:

Yea people definitely love Lincecum…like when Lohse was 65% vs Peavy a few weeks ago. Ralph Mayo, you definitely like Lincecum and WANT to take him, and the fact that wagerline is 60% for Oswalt makes you even happier to take Lincecum. We want to go the opposite of your gut, because your gut is what the public likes. Some definitely like the name “Oswalt” as well, but this is a stay away game.
Its much more attractive to be placing your hard earned money on Cha Seung Baek, Brian Bannister, Jared Washburn, and Gio.
And Ubaldo Jiminez is a great play tonight.
Good luck with the over in Pitt/Cin, because Karstens has a 0.00 era and Volquez has a 2.93…final score, 3-0 Pitt ha

I bet on Lincecum because I’m young and weak. I hope I lose to learn my lesson.
